Spirometry

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) affects around one in ten people over the age of 65, and is a major cause of disability and mortality in the UK and internationally.  National guidelines stress the importance of spirometry in primary care as essential to the early diagnosis of COPD, and successful management of the disease.  As such, spirometry has become an important part of the primary care agenda through the Quality & Outcomes Framework.

This educational package has been developed for GPs, Nurses and any health professional who plans to take spirometry measurements or interpret their results.  After this on-line course, trainees should:

  • know when it is needed,
  • understand what it measures,
  • know how to interpret it,
  • understand how to actually do it

Chapters

  • Spirometry Indications
  • Basic Anatomy
  • Respiratory Diseases
  • Basic Spirometry
  • Interpreting Findings
  • Reversibility Testing
  • Equipment & Maintenance

Knowledge Assessment

Once an assessment has been completed users will be able to use the results as a record of their knowledge and understanding to show that they understand the principles of spirometry. It may also be used to build confidence in their application of knowledge, identify any learning gaps and can be used as self-accreditation by a practice.
